Root Domain Forwarding with SSL and without IP

I want to forward https://mydomain.com to https://www.mydomain.com - note HTTPS. Using the GoDaddy forwarding feature doesn't work for HTTPS - it gives an invalid certificate error for the domain: shortener.secureserver.net

I see from the following articles that to achieve this I need to turn off GoDaddy forwarding and set the A record to an IP address:

However I'm using Heroku hosting and do not have an IP address, only CNAMEs for each subdomain or for the root domain.

I also see from Heroku that GoDaddy doesn't support this scenario and they recommend a different DNS hosting service:

Is that advice accurate and up to date or is there someway I can do this without showing a certificate error to users?
